Four-Season Gardening

Though it looks almost timeless, everything in the picture above was the product of careful planning for a four season garden we designed in what was once a neglected field bordering a weed-choked pond. Winter is especially important in cold-climates like Boston; once the blooms fade, a good landscape still holds your attention. Plants with colorful fruit, like the Japanese crab apples shown here, are a good way to achieve this. Another means is through the use of attractive hardscape: stone walls, gazebos, arbors and other permanent structures will provide your garden with the "bones" it needs to look good during the long winter months.
